Chapter 17
The closest town to Edgewood was called Farnborough. It was pitiful. I knew, as Iâd travelled through it on the train, that it wouldnât be anything close to what I was used to, but when Lucian finally parked the car on the âhigh streetâ I found myself more unimpressed than I could ever imagine.
Lucian laughed as he caught sight of my face. âGive it a chance. Farnborough has a certain quiet beauty to it.â
âQuiet is right,â I muttered. âWhatever. Lead the way.â
âYou wanna grab some food first?â Lucian asked, shoving his hands into his jean pockets and staring down the busy high street.
âFood?â
âYeah, the stuff that sustains you.â
I had to really bite down on my lip to stop from retaliating. âWhere did you have in mind?â
âThereâs this nice little diner about five minutes away. We still have plenty of time before the lantern lighting. Weâll make it back in time.â
âLead the way,â I said.
We walked next to each other but never touching. If I thought the car journey was weird, I hadnât seen anything yet. It was almost five in the evening and dusk had begun to settle. The street lights burst to life and I had to admit, the town was beautiful in a tiny, vintage kind of way. Still couldnât see myself doing any Christmas shopping here, though.
âHey, whenâs your birthday?â Lucian suddenly asked me.
âTwenty-fifth of January. Why?â
He didnât answer at first. âJust wondering.â
It wasnât until heâd brought it up that I realised I had less than two weeks until I turned seventeen. And if Lucian and Sophie were already driving, it meant they had turned seventeen before the school year started. Iâd have definitely known if theyâd had a birthday while lessons were on.
âWhen was yours?â I asked.
âSeptember first.â
Iâd been right.
We arrived at the diner quickly and Lucian held open the door for me, doing a very good job of acting like a gentleman. We sat ourselves at a booth and a young waitress practically ran over to hand us our menus.
âCan I get you anything to drink?â she asked, but she only spoke to Lucian.
âIâll have water. Isla?â
âCoke.â
She nodded. âOkay, Iâll be back in a few moments to take your order. Iâm Denny, by the way.â
Lucian grinned at her, and my whole stomach shot up, twisted and plummeted down. âDenny? Thatâs an unusual name.â
âMy mother has a thing for unusual things.â
âThatâs weird. So do I.â
Denny grinned, and I scowled behind my menu. I would not react, I would not react, I would notâ¦
âWhat did you think of her?â Lucian asked, pushing down my menu so he could see my face. âSheâs gotta be at least twenty, right?â
âShe looks like the kind of person without morals, sense, or standards.â I paused, pretending to contemplate something. âYour type exactly, then!â
âFunny,â he said, swatting me with his menu.
Denny, the unusual, came back to take our orders. Lucian ordered a burger, and I grabbed the shrimp. I hoped my breath stunk of fish the entire journey back and made him feel sick.
